Accessing Tracking UTM Params
How to add your UTM params for contact-level visit tracking.
The UTM parameter works together with the tracking pixel to provide contact-level visitor identification.
Step 1: Access UTM Parameters
Navigate to your Audience in ContactLevel
Click the "Tracking" tab inside your audience settings
Locate the UTM parameter section
Step 2: Copy the UTM Parameter
Copy the unique UTM parameter provided for your audience. This parameter is specifically generated for your audience and ensures accurate tracking.
Step 3: Add UTM to Your Campaigns (next step, see platform specific guides below)
When creating ads or campaigns, append the UTM parameter to your landing page URLs:
Example:
Original URL:
https://yourwebsite.com/landing-pageWith UTM:
https://yourwebsite.com/landing-page?utm_source=contactlevel&utm_campaign=your_campaign_id
Step 4: How It Works Together
Important: ContactLevel does not track random website visitors. It only identifies contacts who are already in one of your ContactLevel ad audiences and who click a link containing the cl_audience UTM parameter. The tracking pixel and UTM parameter work together — both are required for contact-level identification. Neither works on its own.
Tracking pixel — Installed on your website, it works with the UTM parameter to identify which specific audience member visited your site. The pixel alone does not track or identify any visitors.
UTM parameter (
cl_audience) — Added to your ad campaigns, it tells the pixel which audience the visitor belongs to. When a contact in your audience clicks an ad with this parameter and lands on your site, the pixel reads the parameter and records the visit against that specific contact. Both are required — Without the pixel, the UTM click cannot be matched to a website visit. Without the UTM, the pixel cannot identify the visitor. ContactLevel only tracks contacts who are in an ad audience and arrive via a link with the
cl_audienceparameter.
