Installing your Tracking Pixel

How to install your website tracking pixel.

What is Contact Level Tracking?

ContactLevel tracks at the contact level only. It does not track random or anonymous website visitors. The tracking pixel works together with the cl_audience UTM parameter to identify specific contacts from your ad audiences when they visit your website through your ads.

For tracking to work, a contact must:

  1. Be in one of your ContactLevel ad audiences

  2. Click an ad that contains the cl_audience UTM parameter

  3. Land on a page where the tracking pixel is installed

When all three conditions are met, ContactLevel records the visit against that specific contact, giving you:

  • Contact-level engagement data — See exactly which audience members visited your website

  • Campaign performance — Measure which campaigns drive the most engagement from your target contacts

  • High-intent signals — Know exactly who from your audience is engaging with your site

  • Campaign optimization — Use visitor data to improve targeting and messaging

Part 1: Installing the Tracking Pixel

The tracking pixel is a small code snippet installed on your website. It works with the cl_audience UTM parameter to identify which audience members visit your site. The pixel alone does not track or identify any visitors.

Step 1: Access the Tracking Pixel

  1. Click "Tracking Pixel" in the left sidebar of your ContactLevel dashboard

  2. You'll see the tracking pixel code snippet ready to copy

Step 2: Copy the Code Snippet

Copy the complete tracking pixel code snippet provided. This code contains your unique tracking identifier.

If you're using Google Tag Manager:

  1. Open Google Tag Manager and navigate to your website container

  2. Create a new tag by clicking "New" in the Tags section

  3. Choose "Custom HTML" as the tag type

  4. Paste the tracking code snippet into the HTML field

  5. Set the trigger to "All Pages" to ensure tracking works across your entire website

  6. Save and publish your changes

Step 4: Alternative Installation (Direct HTML)

If you're not using Google Tag Manager:

  1. Access your website's HTML files or content management system

  2. Locate the <head> section of your website template

  3. Paste the tracking code snippet before the closing </head> tag

  4. Save and deploy your changes
