Meta Ads: Troubleshooting Common Issues

This guide covers the most common issues you may encounter when using your ContactLevel audiences in Meta (Facebook/Instagram) Ads Manager, and how to fix them.

Junk Leads: Disable Advantage+ Audience

Meta now defaults to Advantage+ Audience, which automatically expands targeting beyond your selected ContactLevel audience. This can result in low-quality leads from people outside your ICP. We strongly recommend disabling this setting when using ContactLevel audiences.

How to disable Advantage+ Audience:

  1. Open Meta Ads Manager and select your campaign or ad set

  2. Scroll to the Audience section

  3. If you see "Advantage+ on", the setting is active

  4. Click "Further limit the reach of your ads" and select "Switch setup"

  5. Navigate to Audience settings and select Custom Audiences

  6. Add your ContactLevel audience back as the targeting source

  7. Click Publish to save changes

This ensures Meta only serves ads to the contacts in your ContactLevel audience, not a broader automatically-expanded group.

Facebook Custom Audiences Terms of Service Error

Meta requires you to accept their Custom Audiences Terms of Service before you can use ContactLevel audiences. If you see an error related to Custom Audiences TOS:

  1. Open this URL in your browser, replacing <AD_ACCOUNT_ID> with your numeric Facebook Ad Account ID:
    https://business.facebook.com/ads/manage/customaudiences/tos/?act=<AD_ACCOUNT_ID>

  2. Make sure you are logged in with an account that has Admin access

  3. Accept the terms

  4. Return to ContactLevel and disconnect & reconnect your Meta integration in the Integrations tab

Ad Account Not Associated with a Business

If you see an error that your Meta ad account is not associated with a business, your ad account needs to be linked to a Meta Business Manager.

How to fix:

  1. Log into Meta Business Manager

  2. Go to Business SettingsAd Accounts

  3. Click AddAdd an Ad Account and paste your Ad Account ID

  4. Return to ContactLevel and reconnect your Meta integration

Permissions Error (Error 200)

Quick fix: Disconnect and reconnect your Meta integration in ContactLevel's Integrations tab to refresh your access token and permissions.

Common causes: insufficient admin permissions, expired access tokens, missing permissions during setup, or 2FA inconsistencies across linked accounts.

Too Many Custom Audiences (500 Limit)

Meta limits you to 500 Custom Audiences per ad account. Delete unused audiences in Meta Ads Manager → Audiences, then re-sync from ContactLevel.
